WAFER Runs Three Programs:
Food Share:
People who come to WAFER receive three to four days worth of food, with as much choice among the offerings as possible. Working one-on-one with a volunteer, clients choose a variety of canned and boxed items, as well as one or two toiletries, frozen meat, dairy items, and fresh produce. Over 1200 households come to WAFER each month.
Senior Share:
Food packages prepared according to a client’s likes and dislikes are delivered to low-income seniors at ten La Crosse County Senior Meal Sites. About 125 senior citizens elect to receive a Senior Share package, preferring it to standing in line at WAFER, then carrying heavy bags and boxes home.
Baby Share:
New mothers referred by La Crosse County WIC (Women, Infants, & Children) Program come to WAFER to receive a baby food grinder and appropriate foods. The moms then return to WIC to receive training on making baby food. The simple devices make healthier and more economic foods for babies.
